Friday February 10th was a cold, wet night in Toronto but that didn’t stop concert goers from huddling outside of Lee’s Palace. There was a buzz of excitement in the air as we shuffled into the venue. Probably one of the nicest crowds I have ever seen, strangers were becoming fast friends as they discussed their favourite tracks. The place was packed, it was hard to get by people but there’s such warm and positive energy you knew it was going to be a good night. Keeping the crowd energized and ready for BROS was Toronto based DJ The Gaff
The anticipation is for BROS, the side-project of siblings, Ewan and Seamus Currie of the Sheepdogs. They released their debut LP in October tilted Vol.1 which features 10 incredibly catchy tracks that blur the line between classic rock, soul, funk and samba. It features their single “Tell Me”. You’ve undoubtedly heard the catchy tune getting tons of airplay on The Edge and Indie 88 and for good reason; Their sound is nostalgic, they’ve got a feel-good funky vibe, that has you grooving to the music.
As the last of the crowd squeezed into the venue, eager fans began whistling and cheering, hoping to coerce the band out of the tiny backroom a bit sooner. Finally the rhythm and horn sections took the stage and the crowd erupted. I could barely make out the introductions over the crowds cheers but I caught “Always before Hoes…. BROS” as Ewan and Seamus took the stage. Although still a relatively new album, everyone was singing along to the songs, dancing and having an absolute great time. The best part was watching the band interact during their set and really groove together, like watching friends jam in a garage, but with the big flashy lights and surrounded by a few hundred people. My favourite performances included “Flight 714” which featured an amazing trombone solo and my favourite track from the album, “Scoobie Doobie”. It was a great night for live music and an absolutely fantastic performance from BROS, I can’t wait to catch them again.
